Extreme Couponing?

by Deb McCormick on February 25, 2013

There was a time not too long ago when I rolled my eyes at coupons. Sure, they can save you money here and there, I thought. I also thought that coupons cost you money because you buy stuff you wouldn’t normally buy. I rolled my eyes are the thought of going to a higher priced grocery store and using coupons. Because couldn’t you save even more money NOT using coupons and going to Walmart? It just seemed like a waste of time to me.

Well, David started watching Extreme Couponing this weekend and kept calling me to “COME SEE THIS” when I was trying to fold laundry, or cook dinner, or browse the Internet for stuff. It was really quite aggravating. But he had a point. The people on that show could motivate anyone to try it. Even this anti-coupon mom. I was overcome with ambition. Oh yessssss, I surely was.

I learned that I need to change the way I think about coupons. I learned that to be an Extreme Couponer, I should try to only use coupons if I could get the item for free or for at least 60% off. And when I could find the deals to do those things, I should stock pile.

So, Sunday I went out and got a Sunday paper and clipped the coupons. I clipped everything because even if you don’t use it, if you can get it free one day, why not…get it free? I also went to several online coupon sites and printed out all the coupons that matched the products Harris Teeter had discounted this week.

free food

My goal today was to only pick products that I could get for free. This is my stash. Didn’t cost me a dime! Nada! Nothing! Zero!

What’s that you say? Sure it may not look like much, but I just started this yesterday. Geez,  give me a minute, OK?!? As I accumulate more coupons each week, it’s only going to get better! You’re SO MEAN.

Harris Teeter also gives kids a free cookie and balloon.

I chose Harris Teeter because they double coupons. It’s all about finding the stores that offer the biggest ways to save money. It DOES take time, though. But as with everything, getting your system down and coming up with your own process can streamline everything to where it isn’t much of a hassle.

It’s exciting! I can’t wait to do it again. Do you Extreme Coupon? If so, do you have any tricks or tips for me?

I do not do couponing
BUT
I think its a great idea – especially if you share with your local food bank.

I know our local food bank also needs personal hygiene products like soap and shampoo and tooth paste and brushes as well as foods.

If I were to get into couponing I would be donation much more to the food bank.

It’s getting to the point that we have to do something. With a family of 6 on one income, it’s hard to make ends meet sometimes.

That’s awesome, some of our grocery stores give triple coupons, so that helps. Now if we could just get coupons for vet care!

Debbie, I think this is great! I’m impressed by your haul and can’t wait to see what you score as you get more into this. I do couponing some, but nothing that impressive. I watch that show on TV and am just in awe…go you!

I super-couponed for two years. It was great and I saved a lot of money. It got harder when I went to a whole foods diet because a lot of the coupons are for processed items, but I still found some good deals, even some free stuff. But then I got more into my blog, so then I quit completely, other than clipping on weekends, items I plan to get at Target. I’m still living off my stockpile of shampoo, lotion, and toothpaste.
